Color Theory

In this class you will learn color principles and how to apply them to real life uses. will, learn the differences between warm and cool colors, complementary colors, tints, shades and how to mix and match color.  We will explore the vocabulary of color and how to apply what you learn to practical applications.  You will create your own color painting to take with you, applying the different color principles you will learn in class.   This is a hands-on workshop which will give you the knowledge and confidence to use color, whether you are a working professional or a homeowner.  Once you understand how to combine colors, you can effectively use their relationship to one another on the color wheel to help you with your next project. 

 

Color Theory Syllabus

9:00-9:30 am:   Introduction

Understanding & working with the color wheel
color vocabulary

10:30-12:30 pm:   Color mixing practice
12:00-12:30 pm: Lunch
12:30-2:30 pm:     Create color wheel & gray scale

In-class project; paint four different color schemes to practice what we’ve learned:

Primary, Complementary, Analogous, Monochromatic

Diane Huyck is a native California artist who has recently made Frederick her home.  She is a graduate from California Institute of the Arts, where she studied and practiced Set Design for Theatre and Film.  After graduating in 1995, she set out to work in Hollywood, California, in both Theatre and Film.  Diane learned many painting techniques and “tricks of the trade” during her days as a Scenic Painter.  She quickly progressed from Scenic Painter to Set Decorator and finally to Art Director/Production Designer for Television and Film.  She now runs her own decorative painting business,where she specializes in color choices and custom finishes for residential and commercial interiors. 

 

Her accomplishments include interior design, decorative painting, fine art, furniture painting, historic restoration, event planning/project management and designing period pieces for Theatre and Film.  Her work can be seen in restaurants, residential and commercial buildings throughout Los Angeles and the Metro DC area. 

Students must bring, notepad, pens & lunch

All other materials will be provided
